On December 18, 2004, Jeff White began to experience “flu-like” symptoms – fever, fatigue, and headache – that quickly led to extreme lethargy and an unusual purple color appearing on his ears. Doctors diagnosed Jeff with a severe case of sepsis. Sepsis is a life-threatening response of the body to an infection in the blood. Because Jeff did not have a spleen the sepsis ran rampant through his body, causing extensive swelling that cut off the blood supply to his limbs and organs. Jeff’s condition was grave and the family was told that there was little chance of survival. But through his will and the answered prayers of many - Jeff did survive. Unfortunately, doctors were unable to counteract the ill effects of the swelling and infection, and they had to amputate Jeff’s hands and legs (below the knees). The overwhelming support that the Whites have received has come in countless forms, but one particular message has been especially inspirational – a card bearing the symbol that means “Will to live.” It truly sums up Jeff’s indescribable strength and courage throughout his journey. As Jeff and his family face the future they are optimistic and faithful. Thanks to God and the support of others they will be able to meet the many challenges that lie ahead. |
